Around the NFC North: Week 1

Goff the rails.

Lions

The Lions were smacked by the Packers, 27-13.

Game Notes

  • Yikes.
  • Lions fans have to be three or four packs of cigarettes in since this game, just thinking about Jared Goff. The meh QB is now 0 for 20 in games without Sean McVay or Ben Johnson. He had just 225 yards on 39 attempts and threw a pick. It seemed like just the fact that Micah Parsons existed gave Goff happy feet. He was checking it down against the three-man rush. Let's remember how horrific the Lions cap situation is in regards to Goff: right now, he counts $70mm against the cap for 2026. If they cut him, he'll count $100mm against the cap. They're already $30mm+ over, so that's not an option. They probably have to restructure him and cut someone good, just to have wiggle room. Perhaps the Packers have one of the league's best defenses, and Goff will rebound. However, if he's just bad again, we may have witnessed the Lions' window closing on Sunday.
  • Speaking of the Lions' salary cap, they gave Jameson Williams a three-year $83mm contract right before the game. He had four catches for 23 yards (long of 11).
  • So, how do they fix it? For starters, the three interior o-linemen need to shape up. None of them had a PFF grade above 60. Rookie Tate Ratledge was the highest at 57.5. The line gave up 13 pressures in the game, and Goff was seeing ghosts even when the pocket was relatively clean. The run blocking was probably worse; Gibbs and Montgomery combined for 20 carries for 44 yards, and Gibbs added just 31 yards on 10 catches. There's a chance that the offense will still work this year, but that will require a good run game and a clean Goff.
  • Onto the defense. Brian Branch was the only player with an elite grade, at 85.1. Ripping off a helmet and throwing it must be a +2.0 at PFF.
  • The Lions' defense played man coverage and stuffed the box to stop the run. It worked to stop the run, but Jordan Love got pretty much whatever he wanted in the passing game while the Packers had their foot on the gas in the first three quarters. I'm sure the team will continue to stop the run, that's how they were designed and they'll get even better at it when Alim McNeil comes back, but the corners need to play better for the defense to work (Terrion Arnold 62 grade; DJ Reed 38 grade; yuck).

Vikings & Bears

The Vikings came back to beat the Bears, 27-24.

Game Notes

  • This game was a disaster for the Vikings through three quarters. The Bears were up 17-6, mostly because first-year starter JJ McCarthy couldn't move the ball and he had just thrown a pick six to bench corner, and former Viking, Nashon Wright. Then, the Bears pulled a full Bears. The Vikings came back, scoring 21 points in the fourth, two JJ McCarthy passing TDs and one rushing, and they got the win. Possibly, the most Bears thinig to ever happen.
  • Neither team could get much going on the ground, Aaron Jones averaged 2.9 yards per carry for the Vikings and Deandre Slow averaged 31 for the Bears. New acquisition Jordan Mason did add 68 yards on 15 carries, but almost a third of those yards came on one long run. That left the young QBs, neither of whom managed a QB rating over 100. McCarthy was 13/20 for 143 yards and Caleb Williams was 21/35 for 210. 87 of McCarthy's yards came in the fourth.
  • None of the skill players for either team really showed out. Justin Jefferson had 44 receiving yards and a TD for the Vikings and Rome Odunze had 37 and a TD for the Bears. The game could best be called a slog until that exciting fourth quarter.
  • Speaking of that, it was interesting to see that much of the fourth quarter excitement came from former Packers players. Aaron Jones caught a 40+yard TD, Eric Wilson blocked a punt and Jonathan Owens made an incredible stop on a 2-pt conversion.
  • If the season goes anything like it has over the past few years, the Bears will continue to show flashes and then lose games and JJ McCarthy will randomly have a top-7 QB season. We'll see.

Vikings-Bears: You have to try to be happy for somebody in this game, and with me, it's never the Bears. So I'll go with McCarthy, who flipped the switch on in the fourth quarter and got the job done in his first career start. The Bears helped him do it by melting down in all three phases when it mattered. It was funny to watch the direct communication between the kick returner and O'Connell in the waning seconds.

Jeez, I can't imagine how much it must suck to be a Bears fan. They start off with so much optimism every year with new personnel or coaches, but as usual, the boo birds were out when the clock struck zero.

I am the opposite, sp...for me, every week in the NFL is a good one when the Packers win, and so does the team playing the Ugly Purple. Twice a year I root for the bares to defeat the Lombardi/NFL Championship-less Men in Braids.

Ben Johnson looked rather sad and dour at the end. He looked like after he had won the lottery, subsequently lost the ticket on the way to collect the winnings.

I understand.

With me, it's still some nostalgia left over from when I rooted for them as a kid. I supposed I was impressed by the "Purple People Eaters" moniker and the huge plumes of bad breath emanating from under their helmets in the winter weather. But their offense could never do squat in the Super Bowl and they got gashed by the run pretty badly--so I eventually abandoned them in favor of other teams.

The Vikings won because of two x packers. Jones and Wilson.
Wilson blocked punt and Aaron jones on the wheel route

He did a wheel route the last year he played for the Packers in the first game of the year vs the bears but pulled his hamstring inChicago.

Aaron Jones should have stayed and played behind Jacob’s .
He had his most carry’s ever last year . Now he the 2nd back with the Vikings.

I would really like to see Lloyd get on the field and see what he can do to get that part of the running game going again.
May be

Brooks need to get that going or Amar Johnson

Amar Johnson is on the Chargers practice squad. The Packers just ditched Israel Abanakanda too, in favor of a new practice squad RB. So neither of those preseason RBs are with the team anymore. How quickly things change at the edges of NFL rosters.

They must have come up short in the blocking department. That's the only way you can stay on the Packers as a backup. Don't have to run that well, just block.

During the first half of the Lions game, I was going to give the game ball to Jacobs, if I had a vote, for the pass blocking he was doing. Then when Love was trying to squeeze the ball to the right side near the goal line, he missed the wide-open Jacobs over in the left flats waving his arms for an easy pitch and catch. Hope Love watches that play and remembers to get Jacobs some more love when it comes to the passing game like he used to with Aaron Jones.

Prognosticators said that the Lions would take the division - but none of them (except me) thought that losing their OC and DC would matter because they had anointed Dan Campbell as their savior and all would be fine. They were wrong.

These same prognosticators also said that the Vikings would place second - but none of them (except me) thought that their 2nd-year rookie QB would play like a rookie QB. They all were still praising J.J. for his collegiate career. The Vikes O-Line struggled in the first half but finally got it's footing in the second half when the Bears wore out. And the juggernaut offense was less jug and more not. The running game was weak, and the passing game was not much better. Yet they prevailed.

Then there's the Bears, who, after all the hype and hyperbole, showed that they were still Da Bears - a plethora of players with no soul. The O-Line struggled to open running lanes or keep Caleb Williams intact (6 pressures). Their Defense wore out and then just died in the fourth quarter. The "good football coach" Ben Johnson (yes, he called himself that) may have been an offensive guru, but his staff is still a work in progress. Just because you inherited a collection of able bodies looking for a leader, doesn't mean that you will automatically win games because you took over - especially when you are the Bears. I think Ben is realizing that today.

And finally, our Green Bay Packers. Slow start - not on Sunday. Weak run defense - not on Sunday. WR dropsies - not on Sunday. Special Teams miscues - not on Sunday. Only 4 penalties for 40 yards. Packers Defense didn't allow much traction for the Lions Offense, forcing them into long punts which resulted in shorter fields for the Packers Offense. The Parsons effect was evident, the crowd fed off that and truly became the 12th man.

Heck of a first week.

Good comments.

Over the last 35 years, the Packers have had the best prepared QBs in the NFL named Starter for the first time. Every one...all three of them.

In the North, the lions have had some stability since Stafford. Before that, lots of trial and error. Ugly Purple, since Favre, have had over 20 starters. Bares: where QBs go to fade away...even if you arrive there as one of the top players in the draft. They have had over 20 QBs too, including Trubinsky and Fields recently. Williams looks incredibly athletic with a strong arm that again will be wasted if the OL's play is repeated.

There were miscues on STs Sunday. Two nice returns, one on KO, another PR, were both called back for holding, putting the Offense in a deep hole. The kicking operations were outstanding. Whelan...wow. McManus perfect, again.

Collectively, what went through all of our minds after the KO return. "Oh no, here we go again". After that, you are correct the ST's played really good. The Packers kicked Lions ass physically and mentally!

The Bears and Vikings looked as expected: inconsistent, poor execution, and far from contenders.

Bears' fans saw enough to continue their delusions about their offense, but when they looked good it was because of guys making plays not because of a good offensive unit. Two or three 50-50 plays went their way on the opening drive and next to nothing the rest of the way-- three points in about 50 minutes.

Viking fans are living with a rookie QB. He gave a little excitement now and then but overall it was sloppy. And he didn't impress with his arm; it was fast ball after fast ball.

Leatherhead and I…among others, often suggested that the Lions would tumble. I have several times called Campbell a big dufus. His knee caps were the ones bitten on Sunday. 1-TD with a minute remaining—so much for the highest scoring team. And good luck this season Campbell attempting 4th down conversions.
After watching the Vikings and Bears -they had better improve fast if they believe they can compete for a division title. They’ve already put McCarthy in the HOF after one game…he was awful for 3 quarters…good luck with that.
O’Connell’s smug/smarta$$ facial expressions bug me—bad.

Yes, I hope the Lions go back to the where they belong - in the basement. I was one who thought the Packers were going to kick butt as I made two sizable bets on them winning by more than the spread. My reasoning was because they lost some very, very high end coordinators and I believe one or two other coaches followed them. That and picking up Parsons onto a Defense that I already felt was going to compete for the top in 2025.

I remember you were one of the people who saw this coming, too. I mean, it's still too early to shovel dirt on them, but they've gotten as close to the Super Bowl as they're going to get under Campbell.

When a team gets that close, and chokes it away, it has to clean house and start over. How many Super Bowls did McCarthy/Rodgers go to after 2014? None, although we stuck with it for a couple of seasons before we started over.

We're going to see how good of a coach Campbell is, and I suspect he's a lot more average than people have painted him.

Didn't you say the Lions were going to implode LAST YEAR? They went 15-2. They did get thumped in the playoffs, but for most of the 2024 season, they were better than they were in 2023.

I expect some regression to the mean this year, but they should still be a playoff team.

They'll beat both the Vikings and Bears and likely will be in the playoffs. There will be regression for sure, but Goff is a good qb and they have weapons galore.

It's not fair to say McCarthy and Rodgers failed in pursuit of Super Bowls, that Bostick error doomed a team that was primed for another Lombardi.

It’s unfair to blame it all on Bostick. At least Bostick tried to make a play. Too many Packers didn’t. Why did Peppers urge Morgan Burnett to take a slide with something like 5 minutes left? That probably came from MM coaching scared, (same reason they kicked all those FGs). The Packers promptly went 3 and out with 3 terrible runs, punted & the onslaught began.

Rodgers sucked, too: 19 for 34 1TD 2 INT and 178 yds. Worse, the Seattle defense intimidated him into not making throws. In the end, he was outplayed by a guy who threw 4 INTs.

Just another fart in the wind.

Bostick's job was to block. Jordy would have fielded the kick. If Bostick would have done his job, and not "tried to make a play", that kick would have floated into Nelson's sure hands and the Packers would have gone on to win.

Greg....in 2023, the Lions had a lead in the second half of the NFC Championship game.

In 2024, they didn't win a single playoff game. In my book, that's regression, even if they won many regular season games.

This year, 2025, if I'm correct, they'll regress more. They won't win the division.

The Lions aren't going to get any closer to the Super Bowl . Eventually, Campbell will be fired and they'll start over. Again.

O'Connell has not won a single playoff game, ever. Three years without a playoff win, and I don't think he'll win a playoff game this year.

How many coaches still have a job after 4 straight years without one single playoff win? If Minnesota misses the playoffs this year, does he still have a job?

He's 34-17, and without last year's anomalous 14-3 season (courtesy of Darnold), he's pretty much an average coach.

"Perhaps the Packers have one of the league's best defenses, and Goff will rebound."

I'll go with that, it's one game against what will probably be the toughest defense he plays this year. I'd be shocked if the Lions aren't in the running for who wins the North. IN addition to Goff, they have a ton of talent.

There’s no question they have talent. IMO, when a team misses its window, the mojo leaks away. Suddenly your 4th down attempts don’t occur (like 4 times vs the Packers last year). Besides, the Lions secondary is shaky, their oline is shaky, their play calling looks shaky. Maybe they make the playoffs—big deal. If they lose to the Bears next week, there will be serious handwringing.

Exactly. When a team misses its window, the mojo leaks away. That's the Lions in a nutshell.

Look at the Packers in 2014. We missed our window. Next year, Jordy gets hurt right off the bat. In 2016, our entire secondary is injured. 2017, Rodgers gets hurt. Finally, in 2019, with a new coach we started winning. But we missed our window...again...in 2020, then had an embarassingly bad playoff loss in 2021, missed the playoffs in 2022, and started building towards another window in 2023.

You do everything you can to get a shot, and if you choke it away, it's usually time to start over.

i just don't see it with Minnesota and Chicago. Both have flawed QB's. Chicago in particular is fucked, they chose the wrong guy #1. Hell, he may be the worst of those first round QB's, he's at least neck and neck with McCarthy who looks like he was quarterbacking a high school team last year...

If you get a chance read Tyler Dunne's takedown of Chicago, Ryan Pace and Caleb Williams.

Brian Flores is a very good DC for the Ugly Purple, unfortunately.

He could have been the Packer DC in 2023 but Lafleur kept the ever failing DC Barry on for "continuity's sake." Matt was spot on about that. Murphy's 3rd year was similar to his prior two years in Green Bay and his stints as DC in Washington and Detroit. Continuously poor Defenses.

So in 2023 when he was available after being fired as Miami's HC, LaFleur passed, but the Ugly Purple didn't. The year delay did net Hafley so glass half full not getting Flores.

Ironically, Barry is now the run game coordinator d assistant for Miami. The man always get an NFL job.

Best reason to use a rotation and so our players don't get gassed. Even so, I think we should play fewer WRs per game, let somebody get their head in the game, develop a hot hand, and go with him. That's very different from relying on a WR1, and still makes it nearly impossible for opponents to craft a game plan.

Yes but there are times when a check down really is the best option, and Goff has consistently done that well. It's a trick GB needs to add to the toolbox. I think this is more on MLF than JL10, and he has improved at making short easy throws. If #85 can develop a real connection to his QB and just get open to give him a relief valve when needed he can be one of the best, possibly one of the best to ever do it.

I tried to watch most of that Monday night game. I wanted to see what the NFC North looked like after seeing what the Packers did to Detroit. For a good while, that game was tough to watch. Neither team looked all that good. I'll give it McCarthy for not letting the early pick six define him and have him crawl in a shell. The kid rebounded very well. The Vikings are a well coached team, I'll give em that.

Oh the Bears. Biggest winners of the off season for how many years running? Laid a pretty big home opening turd. Bears....just being Bears.

That game made me feel all the more optimistic about this year's Packer team.

I'm not a huge Watson fan- yes, he's an athletic freak but I think the Packers have other WRs who are more skilled in the craft than Watson- but I have to say, I think it was not only a class move by the Packers to extend Watson through 2026 for a fair market price even while he's rehabbing, and it will be fun to see Watson and Golden both on the perimeter with Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Heath, Williams.. hell, anyone working with all that open space underneath.

I didn't realize they gave #9 an extension. Between him and Savion Williams both at 6'4" and him and Golden Bullet with elite speed, the three of them on the field is something I look forward to seeing and is worth waiting for.

RE the Lions: HAHAHAHAAH. Couldn’t happen to a nicer group of guys and fans.
RE the Bears: Yep. They are the Bears. Still. Time is a flat circle.
RE the Vikings: They are not going to keep this one score win streak alive for long. It can’t happen. JJ, even if good (and he was NOT on MNF) is going to have lots of growing pains.

It’s our division. The world is as it should be.

I wanted to watch the MN - CHI game but had to settle for the highlights, which makes me reluctant to make any pronouncements on the two teams. It did not seem as though either team had a good offensive line. Chicago traded for Thuney and Jonah Jackson, sending modest picks and picking up a couple of sizable contracts, and then outbid everyone for Center Drew Dalman. Caleb can really run but most of the time on the highlights anyway, he had to. No idea how Ryan Kelly and Will Fries did for MN. The stats did not sound great. I don't subscribe to PFF.

I would say that lines tend to improve during the season. The practices and the games help. I think Chicago's offensive line should be pretty decent this year.

A lot of good teams are up against the salary cap in 2026. Detroit is $32M over the cap that year but they ought to roll over $20M or so. They only have 38 players under contract so that means $10M to get to 51. They have lots of players making huge amounts of cash, so converting salary to signing bonuses to generate cap savings should be easy. The thing that is hard is deciding which players are keeper (acceptable to put large dead money amounts on their deals) and which a team should retain flexibility with.

That said, Goff has a $69M cap number in 2026, with $55M in cash (all guaranteed), and a $14.6M proration. Translated, he has $98M dead but $70M of the dead money comes off the books in 2026. Detroit should try to bite that bullet as much as possible. I think I would wait to see if Goff, age 31, can perform with an average OL and a coach not named Johnson or McShay. Remember, it is not easy to find and keep high quality QBs. GB did it, but at the cost of eschewing playing the QB on a cheap QB contract.

Hutchinson has a $19M cap number in 2026 since he is on his 5th year option. I think I'd wait until December to decide whether to extend him and for how much. Jameson Williams has a $16M cap number for 2026 since that is his 5th year option, but no one has reported the details of his $27M per year new deal. I imagine his 2026 cap number will be less than $16M.
