Around the NFC North: Post-Draft Whispers

What's going on after the draft?

We're over a week out from the draft, and the initial reactions and whispers are rolling in. Let's talk about each of the inferior teams, and then next week we'll start deep dives team by team.

Bears

  • The Taylor Decker whispers are getting louder and louder: the Bears did not address their left tackle spot, and the veteran, and former Ben Johnson left tackle, is still available. Decker is the clear best option at left tackle for the Bears right now, and it feels like a foregone conclusion that he will be the team's starter this season.
  • Scotty Miller has a tryout with the team at rookie camp this week. You may remember when he dusted Kevin King on the final play of the first half of the NFC Championship. I wish I didn't.
  • The general feel about the draft is that the team made some value picks and got a few good players, but did not fill all their needs. As evidenced by this Taylor Decker stuff. I'm going to criticise them like I always do when we do our deep dive, but I will say now that chasing needs isn't a great draft strategy.

Vikings

  • The Vikings' draft was almost universally panned. Which is sort of to be expected out of a team that did the draft without a GM. They took a 315 lb man who has had two foot surgeries in the last year in the first and then sort of realized he was hurt and took Big Citrus, a nose tackle, in the third.
    • Speaking of Big Citrus, it felt like I had gone crazy this week, listening to national podcasters be perfectly fine with the Packers selecting Chris McClellan over him last week. After a few months of Packers guys propaganda, I pretty much figured Big Citrus would be a shew in Hall of Famer. Many national guys feel he is a run-defense-only guy, and that if he can develop a pass rush, it will take time. Interesting that a lame duck quasi-GM would bet on him.
  • The Vikings had a visit with Jauan Jennings this week and then signed someone named Eric Johnson II instead. Can't say I've heard of him. I'm not sure what Jennings, a player who started his career as a slow player and now will be a 29-year-old with an injury history, is looking for money-wise, but I would guess that he needs to lower his ask if he couldn't come to an agreement with the Vikings, which would be a pretty good situation for him. Vikings fans are starting to talk themselves into Stefan Diggs or Deebo Samuel after Jennings left without a deal. Yikes.
  • The team has not extended right tackle Brian O'Neil, who is above-average but not quite Zach Tom-level, and many predicted he would be extended quickly this offseason. It makes sense to me that the owner doesn't want to commit to gobs of guaranteed money for a good player, not great, when they don't even have a GM yet.

Lions

  • In a compilation of draft grades, the Lions ranked 16th overall - the exact middle of the league. The Lions went defense with five of their seven picks, though they took a tackle in the first round potentially filling a big need.
  • Speaking of tackles, the word on the street is that Penei Sewell will move to left tackle with Taylor Decker gone. I've never been one to buy into the semi-Hollywood idea that the left tackle is so much more important than the right because he usually protects the QB's blindside. It will be interesting to watch and see if switching sides four years into Sewell's career is really worth it.
  • Back to the draft graders, to make a long story short, they think the Lions' early picks are high-floor, low-ceiling types. When you're a rebuilding team, that can be what you're looking for - trade down and accumulate assets and use them on high-floor players. But as a team that was within striking distance of the Super Bowl a few years ago and had an objectively bad defense last year, you'd usually want a potential star on defense.

Saw an Athletic article that gave big props to Vikes and 9ers for their off-season moves (at different tiers), when both of them were roundly panned for having the worst drafts of anyone. Do like many Athletic articles, but this one was just plain bad.

The Packers will likely prioritize cornerbacks and defensive linemen in the 2026 NFL Draft to increase defensive depth around Jordan Love.
