Around the NFC North: New Coach Season

You get a new coach, you get a new coach, you get a new coach.....you get to pay Sam Darnold.

It's new coach season. The Bears are working on a whole new staff, the Lions are working on about half of one and, somehow, the Vikings are just standing pat. It's too bad we aren't talking about who the Vikings are going to try to replace Brian Flores with.

Bears

  • The Bears hired Ben Johnson, formerly offensive coordinator for the Lions. Johnson was almost unanimously thought of as the best offensive coordinator in the league and his hiring is a coup by the Bears. Johnson will call plays for the Bears and you'd have to guess that he will have a large impact in personnel decisions possibly even beyond Ryan Poles' tenure.
  • One of Johnson's first moves was great, hiring, probably, the best defensive coordinator in the market, Dennis Allen. Not only did Allen have top defenses in the Saints despite massive cap constraints, he's failed at head coach twice already so you don't have to worry about him wasting time interviewing or taking another job. Look for Jaylon Johnson and Montez Sweat to be the biggest improvers year over year for the new Bears' defense.
  • Johnson's offensive coordinator hire was a bit of a head-scratcher. Declan Doyle was the 28-year-old tight ends coach for the Broncos. The tight ends coach part makes sense - that's the position that Johnson coached. The age part is interesting, to say the least. Johnson is a really smart guy and it's possible that Doyle will be the next Sean McVay in a couple of years. But he could also be the next passing it with Jameson WIlliams down big in the second half of a playoff game decision from Johnson. Doyle reportedly will be responsible for the first draft of the game plan and other organization-type things during the week.
  • Both of these hires are Sean Payton tree hires which is interesting because Ben Johnson has never worked for Sean Payton but Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn both did - Johnson may be attempting to bring that same Sean Payton/no-BS/hyper-detail-oriented culture to the Bears.
  • Pass game coordinator on offense will be Antwaan Randle El. Randle El had an interesting and sometimes exciting career as a player and developed the Sun God as wide receiver coach for the Lions. It's believed that Randle El has a big hand in the numerous trick plays that Johnson ran with the Lions.
  • Al Harris will be Randle El's counterpart on the defense. Harris has been a respected defensive backs coach for years and as recently as last year said that he wasn't interested in a defensive coordinator position. Harris was, of course, a star for the Packers at cornerback and it will be fun to see him a few times a year even if it's for the enemy.

Lions

  • The Lions lost both coordinators. It's extremely rare to see a coordinator get hired as a head coach (Mike McCarthy had one in his entire Packers tenure) to lose both could spell disaster. Let's dig into how the Lions plan to move on.
  • Campbell is staying on the Sean Payton train with the hiring of John Morton as offensive coordinator. Morton has had a long career as a coach in the NFL and spent the last two years as pass game coordinator for the Broncos. Morton's original background came under Bill Callahan and Norv Turner with the Raiders and Chargers respectively. It makes sense that Campbell wants to pair that power run game and deep pass background. We probably won't see as many shallow crosses or trick plays but Jameson Williams could take a huge leap with Morton calling plays.
  • Morton's pass game coordinator will be David Shaw, former Stanford head coach. Unsurprisingly, Shaw spent the last year with the Broncos, though it was in a personnel position. Shaw's hiring is a little bit of a head-scratcher. he's well respected as a leader of men and coach but his recent background has been in very run-first offenses at Stanford before desperately turning to the Wake Forest slow mesh RPO offense. I'm sure Shaw can be successful just didn't expect to see him as pass game coordinator.
  • The other new coach is Kacy Rodgers who was defensive line coach for Tampa Bay and also interviewed with the Packers. Rodgers had been with Todd Bowles for a decade and specializes in the 3-4 defense. He was defensive coordinator for the Jets when Todd Bowles was head coach.
  • The defensive coordinator hire was an in-house promotion. Everyone thought the Lions would promote for offensive coordinator to keep Ben Johnson's offensive momentum and look outside for defense and they did the opposite. Kelvin Sheppard's entire coaching career has been with the Lions though he did play for seven NFL teams over eight seasons. Aaron Glenn talked about mentoring Sheppard to be a defensive Coordinator at some point in the future so you have to expect there will be a lot of continuity in the defense next season.

Vikings

  • The Vikings hired an assistant offensive line coach (or was that assistant to the offensive line coach?) so not much to talk about today but didn't want anyone to think I'd forgotten about them.

I've never seen a season like this, and I've been watching the Norris Division since before the merger. I don't think I'll see another one like it. It's kind of amazing how Lions/Vikes/Packers went 0-3 in the playoffs. At least we lost to the NFC champs instead of getting slapped by a team that got slapped by the Eagles. I mean, the Commodes smashed Detroit, and then got smashed by the Eagles. The Vikings had a similar fate.

Stating the obvious the Bears have some good pieces in place so it will be interesting how Johnson goes .

I would love to see the Lions fall a bit without their OC and DC , they fast became the bully boys after being doormats for so long .
