Around the NFC North: 2025 Week 7
Revenge Week
By Mike Price

It was revenge week in the NFC North for the inferior teams. Dennis Allen against the Saints. Carson Wentz against the Eagles. And the Lions against the football gods.
Bears
The Bears beat the 1-6 Saints, 26-14.
Game Notes
- It was the Dennis Allen revenge game, but not with much help from Caleb Williams. Williams had a QB rating of 61.7. No TDs. Stars DJ Moore and Rome Odunze combined for five catches and less than 80 yards.
- The Bears won, as they have been winning in this four-game streak, because of the rush attack and defense. D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai combined for over 200 rush yards. 30 more yards than Caleb Williams had passing. The Bears' o-line is totally in sync, and both running backs average over three yards before contact. You can take it with a grain of salt because it's the, now, 1-6 Saints and Brandon Staley (current Saints DC) is sort of famous for being bad at run defense, but it certainly feels like the Bears have figured out the run game.
- Williams has the ability, and the Bears have the weapons. If they can get the passing game to link up with this run game, they will be hard to beat.
- The defense is putting it together, too. Tremaine Edmunds had 9 tackles, a sack, and a pick. Kevin Byard and Nashon Wright also had picks; Byard now has four on the season.
Vikings
The Vikings lost to the Eagles, 28-22.
Game Notes
- Carson Wentz gives, Carson Wentz takes away. In his revenge game, Wentz threw for 313 yards and led the Eagles down the field several times. He also didn't throw a TD but threw two picks. You have to wonder if the Vikings would've won this game with Sam Darnold or even Daniel Jones, who were both on the roster last year, and what's going on with JJ McCarthy. How often do QBs miss a month with an ankle injury?
- The run game couldn't really get much going either, with Jordan Mason putting up just 57 yards on 15 carries.
- Defensively, the Vikings were victim to several big plays. DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown combined for over 300 yards with longs of 79 and 45. When the Eagles needed it, they were to go to one of these receivers.
- Perhaps the most interesting part of the game was that the Vikings became the first team to truly try something new against the tush push, having a d tackle literally lie on the ground opposite the center. I don't know if that's going to be the solution, but I'd rather see the tush push go away because of good defense than legislation.
Lions
The Lions beat the Buccaneers, 24-9.
Game Notes
- Remember how everyone was worried about the Lions replacing two coordinators this season. That seemed like a justifiable worry and I wrote about it 40 or 50 times. Turns out it didn't matter. Not only is Kelvin Sheppard probably a better coordinator than Aaron Glenn (who I made fun of for years on this page and who doesn't have a single win as Jets head coach) but it might not even matter who the OC is on a team with the best o-line in football and weapons like Jahmyr Gibbs, the Sun God, Sam LaPorta, etc.
- In this one, Gibbs was the key weapon. He had 17 carries for 136 yards and two tuds and 82 yards receiving on just three catches. David Montomgery had just 21 yards on 13 carries - this game wasn't one for a power run game, but I'm sure that will come.
- On the defensive side, the Lions were doing what we want the Packers defense to do - aggressively pursuing the ball and causing turnovers. They forced two fumbles and had another (very questionable) interception on a maybe tie with the receiver.
- We can only hope that Sheppard will be poached and the cap will break up this offense.

Eagles/Vikings: Hurts and Devonta Smith had career games, and Hurts had a perfect passer rating. This was a fun game to watch--unless you're a Vikings fan and saw Wentz make some questionable decisions.
Lions/Bucs: Another fun game to watch if you like physical play on the back end of the defense (at least with the Lions, now THAT's football!). Now if the Packers could only get their secondary to play like this....Damn, Gute signed Hobbs to that big contract, and the Lions signed Ya-Sin to a year at a little over a million dollars.

gonna be tough to beat anyone else in the North with the sloppy play of the Packers they regressed since the first two games, that's strictly coaching failures.

4-1-1 and they've regressed? It's the NFL, not high school. The Packers are there with the division leaders BECAUSE of talent and coaching, not in spite of it. They've had issues but if you can't see the progress this team has made, well, too bad.

Yes,our terrible coach who is 10th all time in win percentage. Are you sure it isn't because of our crappy players that our poor GM has saddled us with?
We've regressed to the best record in the NFC.

LH, I’ve questioned LaFluer’s play calling recently, but you are absolutely right about his win percentage.

Things are lining up for the Packers to sweep the division. If it's not hard to do, what would be the point?

Don't count your sweeps before you receive the broom.

You aren't hoping for a sweep? Until it's off the board, that's what I want, broomhilda.

My God---Jamyr Gibbs. That guy is a Kamikaze, Swiss Army Knife. He is so small but fearless.
I still think Dan Campbell runs his team like a Special Forces unit. 'Everyone for the team', 'Play for your brother', 'Next Man up- though you are a 6th round pick-lol). He instills tremendous confidence and heart.

IMO—the game was more about Baker being off target, missing two crucial TD throws.
As some know, I’m not a a fan of big dufus Campbell. Had Mayfield been on his game,as he has this year, the 4th down stops by the Bucs, may have bit Campbell in the Hiney.
Campbell bugs me, but not as much as John Lynch, The “genius,” Shanahan, or the smarta$$ smirks of O’Connell.

Definitely agree, Mayfield missed more than just the TD throws, he missed others and on some that were completed it was the receiver doing all the work. Very little touch to any of his throws. Bad game or was the beginning of the season a mirage and this is the true Mayfield?

Detroit fanboy, what is your obsession with the Packers fan sites?
Detroit has a solid one game winning streak going. Wooeeee!

Playing the Lions at Ford Field is a handicap for any team and especially with Detroit coming off a loss. It wasn't any real surprise that Tampa got that kind of game there.
But the Lions are 0-2 playing a good opponent on the road, outdoors on real grass this season. Might be something to think about if they're built to be almost unbeatable at home but not so tall in " real football" settings.

I felt like the fans intimidated the refs into changing two critical calls.

Detroit has 6 home games left on their schedule, plus play 2 on the road indoors In LA and Minnesota. So that's 8 in the "element" for which they are built.
Their only 3 remaining games outdoors on grass are Washington, Philly and Chicago.

We're in the early mid-season.
Minnesota is in last place, where I thought they'd be. They have two tough games upcoming and could lose them both, cementing their hold on the basement.
Bears are better. A real defense,a good offensive line, and some legitimate RBs have them on a 4 game win streak. I think they'll finish over .500.
Lions are 5-2, a half game behind us. They'll probably be no worse than 8-3 when we meet on Thanksgiving.
Packers need to win their home games against Carolina, Philadelphia, and Minnesota. That will give us 7 wins. A win on the road against either Pittsburgh or the Giants would give us 8 wins when we meet Detroit again.
