Packers Vs. Seahawks - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm
Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.
By JerseyAl

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live. These are not likely to be "highlight" plays.
Romeo Doubs - This play had me a bit flummoxed watching the game live. The question in my mind was, did Doubs run the wrong route or did Love throw it to the wrong spot? Well the first thing to note is that Love had to throw it when he did - he got it off just before getting hit. Doubs has his man beat and what Love does is throw this ball to a spot at the back of the end zone he thinks Doubs can get to. This to me is exactly the type of throw he made to Doubs that resulted in a touchdown. This one should have been an easy seven points as well. I don't think this is on Love, and it may not be on Doubs either. It could be that Doubs is running a choice route where he decides where to take it based on the coverage. If that's the case, he made a good decision to go towards the corner of the end zone, as it would have been an uncontested touchdown. The problem is (and you can see this if you stop the video) when Love releases the ball, Doubs is still tilting toward the center of the field. Not until the ball is already out of Love's hand does Doubs make his cut. If not under pressure, perhaps Love has an extra second to see Doubs' cut and throws it to the corner of the end zone. Perhaps I'm just over-analyzing this and one of them just screwed up, but I don't think so.
Edgerrin Cooper - OK, so you saw the sacks, the pressures, the INTs' etc - what a stat line! But if you really want to see what makes Cooper special is this simple tackle that highlights his burst, acceleration and the ability to close on a ball carrier with the best of them. Here he actually stumbles a bit at first, but recovers and chews up yards like they are inches, bringing down Jaxon Smith-Njigba from behind before he knew what hit him. I'm sure Jaxon gave Cooper a "where the hell did you come from" look.
Josh Jacobs - I love Josh Jacobs. To me he's a player that would have fit right in playing in the Lombardi years. He's LIVES for the game. In a recent interview, he noted how Green Bay was perfect for him because there isn't a lot to do there and he doesn't want anything to do, other than concentrate fully on what he loves doing most - playing football. So why am I showing you a play where he fumbles the ball? Well, fumbles happen (in this case a great punch out of the ball by the Seattle defender). But what do you see most running backs do when they've fumbled and it's been recovered by the opposing team? They lay on the ground feeling sorry for themselves. What does Jacobs do? He gets up, finds the guy with the ball and splatters him into the Lumen Field turf with a picture-perfect form tackle. Perhaps he could teach certain teammates to tackle like that? Anyway, this guy is the ultimate gamer and I've completely gotten over Aaron Jones.

It looked to me like Jacobs was tripped by a DE on the ground and that's why he stumbled. But that tackle was text book and punishing and the player had to be helped up. You have to love that!

On the Doubs play: You hope the QB and the WR are always just magically on the same page, but it doesn't always work that way. I think that Love had to throw it when he did and where he did. I think going to Doubs is a good choice.
On Josh Jacobs: He's our MVP. He really seems to be enjoying himself [sarcasm], despite having to get so many yards on his own because he only has a fraction of a line blocking for him. [/sarcasm]
On Cooper: He's a real good addition to the defense. I hope he can stay on the field. Isn't he a result of the draft pick we got from the Jets for Rodgers?

I don't think they were on the wrong page, Doubs just couldn't find the ball.

If he was running the right route, Dobbs clearly heads to the corner, then the ball is thrown to the middle.

Yes, they got Cooper with a pick from the Rodgers trade--after trading back four spots and using that ammo to eventually snag Jacob Monk in the fifth round. I had forgotten about that.

Cooper: As good as he is, I favor moderating his snap count like we did for this game. I think we can get away with a lot of McDuffie and Wilson for the Saints. We want to make sure Cooper is at full strength for the playoffs if we can.

Right, so he needs to play after missing 3 weeks.

And with Walker out, they need him on the field.

He's at 323 snaps on the season, most starting rookies would have that 6 games in. That's still in the learning from every snap stage IMO. The more he plays the more teaching moments Hafley gets with him.

According to Spoff he missed allot of spring and in season learning due to trying to overcome his injuries so they're bringing him on slowly as he gets caught up on the installs and learns his responsibilities. It's about the same for a LB as a TE transitioning to the NFL from school.

Can we wish for an Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs backfield?

You can wish for anything your heart desires, but that’s not happening. Much rather see Jacobs and Lloyd.

He could have drafted Bucky Irving.

What's that thing about great minds, Al? Here's my post from the Watch Party (it earned a thumbs down)):

Funky look on that incompletion in the end zone. Did Romeo turn the wrong way or was the throw off? Still, gotta love the way we're moving the ball

I agree with your thoughts on the play. Yogi Berra was correct in his assessment that you can observe things just by watching. If only NFL broadcasts allowed viewers more time to watch the game on the field with all its starts and stops.
