5 Things to Watch in Packers vs Broncos: Does Anyone Want the Kicker Job?

Sunday represents another opportunity for one of Anders Carlson or Greg Joseph to pull ahead in a somewhat depressing kicker battle.

Clifford vs Pratt

As training camp has progressed, Michael Pratt’s natural talent is starting to shine through, and he is hot on the heels of current number two quarterback Sean Clifford.

Pratt saw time with the second-team offense this week, and on Sunday the coaching staff could provide an indication of where they think the battle is. If Pratt gets some snaps with the twos, it will be further proof he is closing the gap.

In truth, Pratt needs those reps with the second team to give him the opportunity to show what he can do with players who are more likely to actually make the roster.

There is a good chance the Packers end up keeping three QBs on the roster at this stage, but Pratt has two more chances to show he is capable of being the outright QB2, and that could be bad news for Clifford’s place on the 53.

Rhyan vs Morgan (if applicable)

Rookie first-round pick Jordan Morgan seems to have adapted well to the right guard spot, and looked to be in pole position to start in week one before picking up a shoulder injury.

That gave Sean Rhyan a chance to stake his claim, and he performed well in the preseason opener versus Cleveland.

It remains up in the air whether Morgan will be able to suit up and play this Sunday. If he is, the coaching staff will be able to get a clear comparison between the two, and if Morgan holds his own, it should give them the confidence he is ready to be in the starting lineup in week one.

If he cannot play, it may mean Rhyan is the default starter against the Eagles in Brazil. Even if Morgan gets some reps in the final preseason matchup, trusting a rookie to start after only seeing him play in one game might be too much to ask of Matt LaFleur and his coaches.

Dillon vs Wilson

There has been plenty of discourse surrounding AJ Dillon this summer, initially based on his new trim physique and reported strong start to training camp, before turning negative after a pedestrian four carries for two yards against the Browns.

The concerns are warranted in the wake of a disappointing season by Dillon, and given the comparably strong showing by Emmanuel Wilson to open the preseason, Packers fans are understandably getting antsy for a switch on the depth chart.

But what should have been more notable from the Cleveland game was the fact Dillon essentially received veteran starter treatment, getting a few snaps before being taken out, while Wilson played deep into the game.

Dillon probably isn't going anywhere this season, especially since rookie MarShawn Lloyd, who could have posed a more credible threat to his playing time, has battled injuries.

Wilson is more likely to not make the 53 man roster than to overtake Dillon, who has time on task in the system and can be trusted to protect Love. Having said all that, if Wilson impresses once again on Sunday, the noise around Dillon will only get louder.

Does anyone want the kicker job?

Greg Joseph was clearly ahead of Anders Carlson in the race to be Green Bay’s kicker for 2024, at least until the last week, when a string of misses dropped his success rate down to an uncomfortable 82.5%, narrowly ahead of Carlson at 80.6%.

Compared to qualified kickers for last season, Joseph’s accuracy would rank 24th in the NFL, while Carlson’s would be 27th. Both kickers have been less successful during camp than they were last season.

Pulling Alex Hale from the XFL has not bore any fruit either. He is only making 68.8% of his kicks.

At this point, the Packers will be hoping a competent kicker shakes loose from another team, but in the meantime, there are still two more preseason games for one of the incumbents to win the job. It is worth noting Joseph and Carlson both fared just fine in a true game situation against the Browns.

Can the Packers respond after poor joint practice?

By all accounts, the Broncos handed it to the Packers at Friday’s joint scrimmage.

Regardless of whether it was the first, second, or third stringers, Green Bay struggled to get anything going on offense and could not stop Denver’s underwhelming trio of quarterbacks: Bo Nix, Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham.

There is no cause for alarm, as this time of the calendar to try things out and see what you can get away with. After practice, Jordan Love said: “That’s part of practice and part of training camp, you definitely try to push the limit”.

The starters will not play against Denver on Sunday, and pre-season games are mostly meaningless, but this weekend’s game represents an early opportunity for Green Bay to show they can respond after being punched in the mouth, a skill which will be needed in the regular season.

Wilson may have played late into the game but he was the one that had to unsettle the hierarchy. Now there appears to be a contest not only in terms of roster spot but role as well.

As far as the other battles go, I’m more interested in RG behind Morgan (whom I suspect won’t play much, if at all). I want to see good performances from Rhyan and Monk at G and C.

By far my biggest focus will be at T. Tom won’t play and Walker will be rested. Who starts at LT, who at RT and in what order, and who looks like they belong.

In addition to that, I’m looking to see how King and Rochell do as well as the depth WRs (roster and PS) and if Mosby, Cox or A.N.Other can push his case harder at DE.

This the weekend where depth players get to state their case early and often. Let’s hope some do so positively.

It's intriguing to me to have a promising young quarterback like Michael Pratt who had an illustrious career at a medium-sized college not usually in the highlights, and so didn't get drafted with much fanfare.
Can he beat the odds and truly emerge as a solid quarterback in the NFL, perhaps a star, even a superstar?
An early chapter in his quest will play out against the Broncos, and it'll be fun to root for him to make it an early part of a storybook career.
***
I'm still rooting for Sean Clifford, as well, as we watch him strive toward his potential.
Maybe he's the young QB who surprises over the next several seasons.
My hunch is that the Packers keep Clifford and Pratt.
I wonder which one would be more vulnerable if not protected from being taken by another team.
What occurs tonight may go a long way toward answering that question.

I think the Packers should keep Joseph as kicker. Doesn't have the leg Carlson does, but if Carlson can't hit the broadside of a barn, why keep him? Carlson had the whole off season to correct his mistakes but he doesn't look much better. Kicker is one of the most mysterious positions on a team. A kicker can be the difference between winning and losing, so why hold onto a guy that puts knots in your stomach every time he's on the field?
Wilson always looks great in the preseason but often gets hurt. Dillon seems to have lost a step which is bad. Close call.
Morgan is going to make the team regardless. Rhyan is going to make the team as well. Rhyan might be beaten out by Monk. Really interesting.
Poor practice: It happens. Sean Payton is a damn good coach so he should have the Broncos ready to knock some heads in their division.

About AJ Dillon:
- I like him very much as a person even though I "know" him only through the internet. People liki him are the salt of this franchise,
- as an amateur lifter I admire his quads and overall stature. Especially this years he looks strong,
- I remember his rookie season when as RB3 he sent us glimpses of great player, especially Titans game when Derrick Henry fall into his shadow!
- I also remember times when our offense was like dead and with no Jones on the field. AJ Dillon looked relatively good when we were terrible,
- the problem is that we need not only good character, it is not bodybuilding nor powerlifting contest and after some time it matters how much you produce, not who you could've been,
- many people write that he faces really tough situations on the field. Maybe. Maybe I am also too blind to notice football details. But what I've seen was much smaller Aaron Jones converting short downs more frequently, not to mention his overall production. I look at Wilson and it feels refreshing, lighter, easier. I don't know if he has lighter boxes, he faces worse opponents, but he looks... better.
- AJ Dillon - as a fan of yours I keep my fingers crossed for you making the team and finally blossoming, but every week you need to do more to get there. You could not care about opinions of people not living in your home but the train is going. It's time to jump in or you will be left on the station.

There are 15 OL on the roster. Barring a trade or injury - 7 are basically set and 2 are likely out, leaving 6 to realistically compete for the last 2 or maybe 3 roster spots.

OL spots 1 to 7 appear set: Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Morgan, Rhyan, Tom, Monk.
Tenuta and Smith seem like non-factors.
That leaves: Jones, Glover, Telford, Jennings, Dillard and Newman.
I am anxious to see what happens for # 8, 9 and maybe 10.

Caleb Jones has been surprisingly quiet. Glover too.
Telford has had chances with the 1s, but hasn't taken advantage of the opportunities (yet).
I was REALLY excited about Donovan Jennings - but the knee injury has put him way behind.
I would be hugely disappointed if Dillard and Newman made this team over any of the younger guys with more potential.

With 2 preseason games to go, my best guess is that Dillard is cut, Newman traded, Jones is #8, Telford #9 and Glover and Jennings go to the PS. There will not be a 10th spot, as GB will try to fit a QB3, or RB4 onto the roster.

I agree that if Pratt beats out Clifford for the #2 job, Clifford could be in danger of being cut and then relegated to the practice squad. However I still think that, in the end, they will keep both of them.

I got the impression that Jordan Morgan had already won the RG spot before his injury, so I fully expect him to be back in there as soon as possible and starting against the Eagles in Brazil. He's more talented than Sean Rhyan. At least Rhyan showed something last week as possibly the top backup at all three interior O-line positions. Jacob Monk is also looking better, and I'm hoping Donovan Jennings sneaks into the conversation now that he is finally healthy.

Good point about A.J. Dillon receiving veteran starter treatment in the first preseason game. I hadn't thought of it that way, but you may be right. I like Emmanuel Wilson's upside though, so I'm hoping he continues to make things interesting.

I am not as anxious as most people about the kicker situation. Comparing their field goal percentages in training camp with regular season percentages is misleading because they are mostly kicking long field goals in practice. By all accounts, Greg Joseph's kicks have generally been straighter and truer than Anders Carlson's, so at this point I would lean toward keeping Joseph.

Who is picking up Sean Clifford if he's relegated to the practice squad? There is no reason to carry 3 QBs if these are the choices. Now if you had an experienced backup in Tannehill for example but see something in Pratt, I'd get it.

But you don't keep Sean Clifford on the roster in fear of somebody plucking him off the practice squad.

I think keeping 3 qbs on your active roster is an extravagance that requires the rest of your roster to be well in place.

Make no mistakes, if the packers keep 3 QBs on the 53 man roster, they’re not trying to protect a QB from being taken from them- they’re trying to shop either Pratt or Clifford to a team that needs a QB for a player or a pick.

Which goes back to my original point. Who is trading for Sean Clifford? The Vikings just lost a QB and signed Matt Corral from the UFL.

After tonight's performance, the Packers will probably be able to move either Clifford or Pratt to PS without much issue.

With only a few exceptions (mostly draft status), they could cut almost anyone that played in Denver. LOW risk of being claimed. What a dumpster fire.

"""Compared to qualified kickers for last season, Joseph’s accuracy would rank 24th in the NFL, while Carlson’s would be 27th""""

Is this the appropriate time to mention that Carlson was perfect from 40 yards on in? 20 out of 20!!
