5 Takeaways From Packers 28 - 17 Commanders: Tucker Kraft’s Big Night

Kraft had a career high in receiving yards in Green Bay's triumph over Washington on Thursday Night Football.

Tucker Kraft’s big night

There is a long list of positives to hit on for the Packers on both sides of the ball from Thursday night’s win, but perhaps the headline was Kraft announcing himself to a national audience.

After a hot start to the season in which Kraft has racked up 140 yards and two touchdowns, he is now in some exclusive company in terms of production at the tight end position.

In his last 17 games, Kraft is now up to 57 catches for 796 yards and nine touchdowns. Only four tight ends have more yards in that same span (Brock Bowers, Travis Kelce, Jonnu Smith and Sam LaPorta) and all of them had at least 94 targets, while Kraft only has 78.

Kraft leads all tight ends in yards per target (10.2) and yards per reception (14). He is seeing more target downfield and has fully arrived as one of the premier players at his position.

Packers defense dominates again

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense presented a different challenge to that of Jared Goff and the Lions in week one, with Daniels a much more dangerous threat to run the ball, but it did not matter, the Packers defense suffocated them all the same.

After facing one of the league’s most feared rushing attacks last week, and one of the most mobile quarterbacks on Thursday night, Green Bay has allowed just 97 rushing yards on 41 attempts, a 2.36 average.

The Packers effectively contained Daniels, who did not pick up a first down on any of his scrambles, but they did not have to sacrifice pressure to keep him under wraps.

Green Bay racked up 33(!) pressures on Daniels in the game, led by Micah Parsons (no surprise there) with eight and Devonte Wyatt with seven. Ten Packers defenders in total had a pressure and six different players had at least half a sack.

Jeff Hafley’s defense did not allow a touchdown in the first three quarters in week one and two, and could not be off to a better start to the season.

Room for improvement for Packers offense

Down two starters, and their two highest paid players on the offensive line, it was to be expected the Packers offense could look a little more disjointed than they did a week ago, and losing Jayden Reed on the game’s first drive did not help matters.

Jordan Love and Matthew Golden were not quite in sync on two deep bombs which could have padded the score, while Brandon McManus clanked a field goal off the upright. And still, the Packers put up 27 points for the second straight week.

There is more meat on the bone for this Green Bay offense, and more layers to unlock, but despite being compromised up front and making several unforced errors, they still had too much for a Washington defense which allowed six points last week. That bodes well for the rest of the season.

Dontayvion Wicks is back in a groove

Wicks played an underrated but important role in Green Bay’s victory on Thursday night. He only had four catches for 44 yards, but converted all four for first-downs, helping to keep the offense moving.

He had six targets in all, with Love just missing him on a deep pass which could have resulted in a touchdown. Wicks looked smooth and was catching the ball with confidence, putting the drop issues from 2024 behind him.

With Reed expected to be out for at least six weeks with a broken collarbone, Wicks will continue to be a valued part of Green Bay’s offense moving forward.

Shaky special teams

Green Bay’s special teams units did not match the impressive performances of the offense and defense against Washington, having a tough night in all phases.

They did not return the ball well, backing up the offense regularly. They also allowed several big returns from the Commanders to set them up near midfield, and a 15-yard facemask penalty by Ty’Ron Hopper also gave Washington good field position on another punt.

McManus’ missed field goal was close, and he rebounded by drilling a 56-yarder later in the game, while Daniel Whelan was still punting the ball well, but the Packers’ coverage units left plenty to be desired and must improve in future games.

STs was disappointing, but they appear to have missed Melton in coverage. I’m not sure who took his place. The Golden experiment as a punt returner needs to end now we are down Reed. Hardman is surely elevated and the decision making likely won’t suffer while we protect Golden.

PFFs non skill position grades seem particularly dubious this week, but I think the D could not be asked for much more. Offensively it was continually baffling how we managed not to be further ahead. Obviously getting Tom back and Banks will help, but the bigger picture is that we need to get a settled OL and let them play together consistently asap. That would help in the run game considerably I think. It just looks disjointed. So far, Kinnard looks more effective than Belton. We should learn from that, accept it and not fight it if the need continues. We are in win now mode: the future comes second to results.

Kraft had 6 targets and caught all 6. Musgrave caught both of his targets too. Move Golden into the slot more often in three WR sets and give Wicks starts outside and keep those two TEs as busy as possible otherwise.

Fitzpatrick is not a good blocker. I really wish Gute would find a TE/FB who could just do that well and leave Fitzpatrick as an injury replacement. We have an open roster spot (assuming Reed opens another and Hardman replaces him). A true blocker might make a real difference.

Great thoughts as always, CW. I liked seeing Musgrave bring in a couple, and hey — he actually got some YAC on at least one, instead of his usual “CSF”… catch-slip-fall.

Agree. On offense I see way to much hero ball instead of just taking what defense gives you. When it's 4th and 3 you take a thirty yard shot down field in instead of moving the sticks. I'm a big fan of the sink and dunk myself. Unless the receiver is wide open.

Yes very irritating. Love continually throws long and is not very accurate on 3rd downs and long. Just move the chains. Why isn't MLF talking to him about this?

Disagree on oline. Rather than win now we are in win the Super Bowl mode. I want to have as many ready quality oline as we can. More than once injuries on the oline have really hurt the packers in the playoffs. Look at this week with already two guys out. Getting Kennard was a great win especially for an 6th and that contract. Having three backups that we can survive with is huge. Playing Belton will help him improve and he could actually become better than others at some point. Competition has also helped starters improve ( Rhyan and Walker).

Belton cost us the TD, the one Reed broke his collar bone on. Get him experience yes, but not when it can hurt us. Kinnard is better until Belton learns not to commit penalties.

It’s early, and there is more meat on the bone (as you said) for the offense. But DAMN if this isn’t the best looking/complete team I’ve seen in GB since, what.. 1997?

If you are talking D, then yes, though that Woodson led Super Bowl D intervened. Offensively, I’d say we’ve had several spells more impressive/potent/consistent. We have all the pieces when healthy that this could change by the season end (except perhaps a proven change of pace back).

We have not as yet had the OL health and stability necessary and are hurt at WR, but more so we are just not firing consistently yet. We find ways to trip ourselves up that the D is fortunately covering us for thus far. It’s early, it’s worth being excited about, but the O as yet hasn’t truly delivered.

I was saying the same thing last night and got many jeers for it. Don't believe I have seen a complete Packer Defense flying to the point of contact like this D since 1996/97. Haven't had confidence in a pass rush since early Clay Mathews but he was only 1 guy. Now it is like a pack of Hungry Wolves running down an Elk. Very impressive and that gives confidence to the offense since they aren't playing from behind. Very, very impressive performance against 2 of the top teams in the Conference. Even were able to control a running QB for once - Whaaat !

A nice start to the season. Now, beat Cleveland on the road and go 3-0.

I'm not going to go into the very nice performances by Nixon and Kraft and some others, but I do want to say a word about Heath. THAT catch was stupendous, and if a guy is going to go out and make catches like that in the game, you've got to get him on the field and throw it to him. Reward exceptional efforts.

I kind of figured that our defense was going to have enough speed to keep Daniels in check, and that's the way it worked out this time. This is a really good defense, and I think teams are going to have trouble getting over 20 on us. Remember, Detroit and Washington were two of the NFC's powerhouse offenses last year, and we kind of spanked them.

We're going to the Super Bowl. The planets have lined up. This is our year.

Have learned mind melding from Spock?

You have written my thoughts. Like you, I truly enjoy a controlling Defense. And have always liked Heath. Losing Reed is a blow (he's so talented) but Heath is a WR you can win games with. A complete plus player.

Heath not only caught his one target, it's simply impossible to do it better. League wide that was the third hardest catch since 2018; his shoulder pads were a foot and a half out of bounds and the nearest defender was close, those are the metrics they go by to determine that stat. He held onto the ball without even a hint of bobble throughout contact with the ground, there was simply no way to rule that as anything but a catch. Our HC even threw the challenge flag appropriately!

Kraft: Looks like he might be Mr. All-Pro this season. Happy to see Musgrave get in on the action as well.

Defense: They did a terrific job bottling up Daniels at all times, including two nice tackles by Wyatt and Bullard to keep him from breaking containment. Overall run defense was outstanding as noted.

Offense: Would like to see better run blocking from the IOL if we're going to continue pounding the ball inside with Jacobs...This game illustrated that we have plenty of weapons that can be used at any time in multiple ways; so I would have liked to see more of them deployed in the third quarter instead of waiting until the fourth as Washington inched closer--but that was still a great drive in response to their TD.

Special teams: Jeez, what else is new? Sigh, Bisaccia...Either cut down on the penalties or stop the big returns, but please not both.

Reed injury: This sucks. But I've been encouraged by what I've seen from both Golden and Williams. (Got to get Williams some bigger cleats as he slipped on a play with more green in front of him--but still a nice gain).

All in all, a well-deserved break before the show goes on the road. The Packers have a lot to be proud about so far.

"Defense: They did a terrific job bottling up Daniels at all times"

When your DBs are able to play facing up the QB in zone because they know he's going to need to unload fast, they're also able to respond to a running QB faster. They're not getting run out of plays by streaking WR.

Solid observation...part of the ripple effect ... or the MPP (Micah Parson Problem) tsunami effect.

The DBs are a solid group led by X & Nixon. Nixon is so adept at reading the QBs eyes (vision) and getting to the ball quickly (break). So is that Valentine kid. Hobbs had a good game too.

A solid 4 or 5 behind a possibly elite front 7 or 6? Pinch me.

Two things, one future and one present. First, Kraft is in the third year of his four year rookie contract. The team should be looking to lock him up for a few years, but he is not going to come cheap. I'll trust the front office (Russ Ball in particular) to figure something out. But signing him early could save the team a lot of money in the long run (something Jerry Jones doesn't seem able to grasp- thank goodness).
Second, the trade of two firsts and Kenny Clark to Dallas for Parsons is looking like a steal. And, no offense meant to a guy who gave his all to the team for ten years, but Clark had turned 30, and the DL seems to have come alive in his absence. After all, ten years of being in the trenches, getting double teamed and constantly battling for all that time has to take its toll. And the addition of Covington seems to have supercharged the defensive line. Getting pressure with a four man rush on a regular basis? This was a pipe dream for years. Now it's a reality. And when Parsons himself volunteers he is impressed with LVN, praising his selflessness and work ethic? Icing on the cake.

There's a lot to like about this team, including the fact that they have only begun to realize their potential. It's a long season and lots of twists, turns and injuries are no doubt still ahead. But imagine this offense if we can get a healthy O Line, Reed and Watson heading into the playoffs! And the sky is the limit for this defense, again assuming no key long-term injuries. I haven't been this excited about the defensive side of the ball since Reggie, LeRoy, Gilbert and company in the late 90's.

Now go fix the damn special teams Biasachi!!!!!

Great to see the Packers now have a Defense that will be feared...and can carry the Team if the Offense falters.

Packers have soundly defeated two of the best offenses in the NFL to be 2-0.

The MPP (Micah Parsons Problem per analyst Ballinger), has not just created a ripple effect, it created a tsunami. He has helped unleash all those high draft choices...Gary, Van Ness, Wyatt, Cooper, Walker and elevated Wooden, Enagbare, all the Safeties and Mr. Lockdown Nixon. K's the best CB in football over 2 games.

But Kraft! Geez keep Love clean and he will slice you to pieces. Until he goes to the cleaver Kraft. He's an Abrams Tank and can probably outrun one.

The Associate Head Coach needs to up his game. Too many stupid mistakes continue on returns and coverage. Kind of a hallmark of Bicassia's tenure in Green Bay.

I’m most thankful not to see the complaints about Gutey and LaFleur. And constant complaints about Gary and LVN and Wyatt and Walker. Right now, with Harley’s defense and Covington’s coaching they all look well worthy of their first round status. Oh and the redemption for Jordan Love who didn’t play well when hurt last year but now has the footwork, decision making and accuracy we all hoped for in a first round QB. Maybe Gutey isn’t a bad GM.

I believe many here have believed Gutey has been, and is a very good GM of Player Personnel. He is not a GM in the role of his former boss Ted, or Ted's boss, the Wolfman.

I find myself now looking forward to the national pundits "yeah but who is the Packers go to receiver?" It really seems to break their minds that the answer is - they don't have one. They have a bunch of them. Even with the depleted squad right now, they have: Doubs on the slant, Wicks on the out, Golden down the field, and Kraft in the seam all as go to plays. And the NFL at large can't seem to wrap their heads around this concept.

I am here for it. I want to see the Packers have a different leading receiver each week and watch ESPN talking head fools lose their minds.

Also: Malik Heath with the toe drag swag, our #6 WR doing it as well as can be done. #88 down the seam. Mecole Hardman, Mr big play SB winner himself, on our PS. Bo Melton (both with a 4.33 40) on the roster as CB but hasn't forgotten how to play WR. Rookie Savion Williams at 6'4" and over 220#. #9 might return as early as week 6. And #11 will return, probably with ample time to ramp back up to 100% before the playoffs.

Our great RB room can all catch, even though they're under utilized so far.

5 takeaways -

1 - Tucker Kraft is among the best in the league and it's not up for debate

2 - Jordan Love is quietly dismantling opposing defenses regarsless of injuries on the offensive side of the ball

3 - Keisean Nixon had the best game of his career, 5 targets and 5 breakups. What a performance

4 - The Packers pass rush is something to be feared. They faced one of the best lines in football and one of the most dangerous mobile QB's in the league, holding both to modest numbers to say the least. Micah Parsons is absolutely being mugged on every play and it still doesn't matter, GB is making things happen. What a massive addition he turned out to be

5 - I think I can speak for everyone when I say we're sick of the refs. They have been shitting on GB since the very start of the Lions game and they blew plenty of calls in that game, as well as last night. The hold on Rhyan that nullified the Reed touchdown was less of a hold than what Washington was getting away with on every single play and the refs refused to call it. Choke hold, arm bar, jersey pull, ripped to the ground, blocked in the back, it didn't matter if it was Gary, LVN, Wyatt, Wooden or Parsons, all of them were being penalized on literally every single play and they never called it. They need to get that straightened out because that game was almost unwatchable after Fitzpatrick was held and got called for holding on a Jacobs first down run, and then Hobbs got called for holding Ertz who initiated contact and commutted OPI on a fourth down stop while they were driving. Please figure something out, NFL because your golden boys just got their asses beat on national television and the Packers are still hungry.

All in all, the pack is back and sitting at 2-0, I couldn't be happier.

Depends on the severity and his pain tolerance. I've had two oblique tears myself, ironically, both of them from sneezing. Didn't have surgery for either one because the surgical options for those aren't particularly good. I declined those because it would have kept me out longer and there was no guarantee it would make me any less susceptible to the same injury in the future. I was back to "normal" activities in a couple of weeks. I think the worst of the two was 3 weeks. I'm an amateur strongman competitor, so normal for me involves "slightly" more strain than regular folks. The "bad" tear, I was also an assistant wrestling coach. So, it was about 3 weeks before I could get back on the mat and throw high schoolers around again, while also carrying idiotically heavy things. Only real downside is I have to be a lot more religious about my ab work as they weaken pretty quickly any time I start slacking.

Life's little jokes, right? Causes of childhood injuries include falling off playground equipment, various sports-related collisions, and skateboards/bikes/skiing. Causes of adult injuries include sleeping in a funny position, stretching, and sneezing.
