5 Takeaways From Packers 25 - 27 Vikings: The Packers Are Not a Great Team Yet

The Packers missed their last chance in the regular season to show they can defeat a true contender.

The Packers are not a great team yet

In 2024, the Packers had to learn how to become a good team. It was a winding, at times frustrating road, but by the end of the year, they had achieved it, building themselves into a group which could give any NFL team a game.

This season, with more growth projected for the league’s youngest team, there was an expectation they could take another step and become a real Super Bowl contender. Green Bay has learned this year how to be more consistent and take care of inferior opponents more easily.

Based on the strong record the Packers have had for almost the entire year, and entering this week’s game, the strong statistical ranks they held on both sides of the ball, it appeared they were on the cusp of becoming a truly great team.

The one thing that was missing was proving they can beat a fellow contender, and after falling to the Vikings on Sunday afternoon, that box will remain unchecked in the regular season. Green Bay is now 0-5 against teams with superior records to them.

More disappointing than not managing to win any of the games against Philadelphia, Detroit and Minnesota is the fact Green Bay too often did not give themselves any realistic chance to come out on top, due to digging too deep of a hole with early-game mistakes.

It was the same story on Sunday in Minnesota, and although the final score ended up close, it is difficult to draw the conclusion the Packers are in fact close to being able to defeat one of the NFL’s premier teams.

The Packers may have gone from a good team to a very good one in 2024, but they are not a great team, at least not yet, and if they are to go deep into the playoffs, they will have to repeatedly do something they have not yet been able to do once in five tries in the regular season.

Tougher playoff path now looms

Speaking of that playoff path, the Packers’ road to a potential Super Bowl is now on the verge of getting considerably tougher.

For a while it has seemed Green Bay was destined for either the five or six seed in the NFC, which would send them on the road throughout the playoffs, but in the Wild Card round would see them matched up with an inferior opponent; either the winner of the NFC South or West.

But mostly thanks to a concussion suffered by Jalen Hurts, which helped the Commanders overcome the Eagles last week, the Packers are now on course for the seven seed unless Dallas can beat Washington, and Green Bay beats Chicago in week 18.

If the Packers are the seven seed, they will be going to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in the first round of the playoffs, a less than appealing task compared to playing the Rams, Buccaneers or Falcons, especially for a team who is yet to beat an elite opponent.

It has felt for a while like the Packers would enter the Wild Card round as heavy favorites and likely dispatch whoever they faced, but now the reality is setting in that a first round playoff exit is very much possible.

Another slow start on offense

Not for the first time this season, the Packers offense was mostly to blame for the slow start from which the team could not recover.

Green Bay was rolling right down the field on their first drive before Josh Jacobs coughed up his second fumble in as many weeks, and the offense did very little thereafter until the fourth quarter.

Matt LaFleur said after the game the team was surprised by how much man coverage the Vikings played against them, despite the fact they had increased the amount of man they played recently, and this could have contributed to their early struggles.

However it should not have been a shock to LaFleur that they saw so much man coverage, especially considering Jordan Love’s numbers are much better against zone this season, and the Packers were missing Christian Watson, who helps them take advantage of man looks.

Given the injury issues Green Bay’s defense was dealing with, the offense, which scored 30-plus points in each of the previous five games, needed to carry the load, and instead they put far too much pressure on Jeff Hafley’s unit to keep them in the game.

It was disappointing to see LaFleur and the offense not be able to come up with answers sooner.

Injuries undermine Green Bay’s defense

Facing a potent offense like Minnesota’s is a tough assignment in any week, but Hafley simply did not have the personnel he needed to hold the Vikings down.

Entering the game without Jaire Alexander and Evan Williams, the defensive backfield took another hit when Zayne Anderson, who had been playing well, left with a concussion.

Javon Bullard, playing through injury himself, struggled in the game and appeared to be responsible for Minnesota’s first touchdown of the game, as he let Jalen Nailor get behind the defense for a 31-yard score.

Green Bay’s pass rush was not effective enough throughout the game, and when Devonte Wyatt also suffered a concussion, it only got quieter.

The defense actually did a solid job of keeping Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison quiet, which was clearly the goal, and Carrington Valentine’s interception set up the offense for their first touchdown of the day, but ultimately when a play was needed on the final Minnesota drive, Hafley’s group could not make it.

To stand a chance of containing the league’s top offenses when the postseason arrives, the Packers need to get healthy on defense in the next two weeks.

Edgerrin Cooper is still really good

Like seriously. Really, really good.

just read this on another Packer site and it hits spot on...""I think LaFleur is not happy unless he is “out-smarting” his opponent….and, personally, I think GB has peaked with him as a HC and play-caller."".

I'm sort of leaning the same way but I think he's back next season no matter what. The thing about MLF that is really starting to wear thin on me is his emotions, As in he CAN'T keep them in check.

He's the Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers. If he's FREAKING out over what's going on EVERY time on the field, these youngsters are looking at him. What kind of message is that?

The dude needs to calm the hell down.

Matt LaFleur is not a great HC. This team plays in his image. Time to move on or continue to flatter to pretend until we play a good team and get whipped motivational and tactically multiple times for the same reasons.

Time to open our eyes to the record of 7 years and the repeating themes. Did yesterday really surprise anyone in how it went down? That’s the point. Time to move on from LaFleur. Let the Bears have him. It would be fine by me. His genius is as tangible as the Emperor’s new clothes and a myth as often repeated as that fable.

I see his play calling as very rigid and he doesn't adjust well. We all know the Vikes have a good pass rush yet he's calling long developing plays downfield? No short curls or outs and slants? And we were running the ball well enough and like usual, he gets pass happy and ignores the ground game. I think there was 1 screen to Kraft all game. No gives to Reed. The defense played well enough to win but MLF doesn't seem to be able to call plays to get the offense in a rhythm early and the opponents defense on their heels.

Sure, he’s great calling plays against the Bares and the Ain’ts but when you play the Vikings and Lions all of a sudden every play on the sheet doesn’t work and it becomes tougher.

It is my belief that LaFleur currently lacks the necessary demeanor to be a Championship coach. The HC is expected to set a high standard of thought, action and behaviour for the team. So being overly emotional on the sidelines is a disservice to the team - as it can lead to poor decisions and negative outcomes. Such as the decision to not take field goal points against a very good team.

Lafleur has often stated that some of his decisions come from his gut (which incidentally is close to a person's arse). Perhaps these decisions should be more frontal lobe - the part of the brain responsible for controlling our responses to acheive a goal..

I saw the excellent play about the Packers focused on St. Vince and half of the excellent actor playing him had over half his lines shouting, upset, emotion on his sleeve most of the time.

The woman who played his wife Marie was outstanding playing the role of his calming guru. I have read she was the only one who could get Vince's blood pressure down.

Does MLF deserve some blame for this loss, of course, but you continue to bash him as if he is the one missing an open receiver, or fumbling on the opening drive that up to that point was successful.

Do I question some of his decisions? Absolutely!! What I don't question is his ability as a head coach. This team could have quit down 27-10 with little time left. They didn't. They have fought to the end in every game they have lost. Players don't fight unless a culture has been established. Cultures are not established with a shitty head coach. You give him zero credit for that.

Will Matt Lafleur coach this team to a Super Bowl win? I have no idea, and neither do you. What I have come to realize in my time here at CHTV is that very few coaches in the history of football would pass the scrutiny of the " His genius is as tangible as the Emperor’s new clothes and a myth as often repeated as that fable." Coldworld standard .

Carry on : )

Tampa Bay has a punchers chance. If you're in the playoffs you have 60 minutes to keep playing. Baker Mayfield can get white hot, and anything is possible. Ditto for any of the wild card teams this go round. There are no easy outs in NFC, despite your protests to the contrary.

If Baker can get hot so can Jordan. It's more hypothetical than GB's record against Det, Minn and Phila. Sure there are no easy outs but you can not be serious if you are also saying you don't think the Pack would have a better chance against a team they beat LAR or TB than against 3 teams they lost to.

Omg yes. I’m the GM of another team and I know the GBP have an All world player who is never on the field and the first thing I’m going to do is give the Packers a couple of presumably high picks so that the GBP can draft a better CB and a DE. Meanwhile my new All World CB remains on the shelf injured. Sounds like a great plan, What am I missing ? Sorry, gotta run to the used car dealer to trade in my never running car for a couple of Ferraris even up. I’ll take my answer off the air…

The defense played well enough to win. The offense gave them nothing.

The Packers can beat any team but they cant fumble on the first drive, they cant drop passes. The qb has to understand game situation. You simply do not go deep at the end of the. first half on a 3rd and short. You have to convert that 1st down. YOU HAVE TO. You can't give the ball back to the Vikings high poser offense with a minute and a half left in the first half. They will score and they did and just that one huge mistake by love and Lefluer was enough to lose a close game.

It's one thing after the other. Jacobs has an amazing run for a TD and what was it, I cant remember. Too many men in the huddle or lined up offsides?

It's redeculous how many mental mistakes they make. They will never win anything if that doesn't stop

This team seems undisciplined. These penalties are killing them and that is on the coaching staff. They have gone as far as they can with mlf. He is not an offensive genius. The defense still can't make a stop when they need to. They had a chance to win at the end of game and defense comes up short as usual.

Yo barkeep, all I ask is for a chip and a chair...a shot of 151...some quarters for J5 on the jukebox...

At least the Pack tends to be winning and if not winning, hopefully learning. At some point, the BIG BOY Pantz need to come on and the Bob the Builder underwear comes off.

It could be worse, check out NY Jets = J-E-T-S

It's always darkest before the dawn - just ask Chester Marcol on his blocked FG against da Bears. We will be fine one way or the other. I may be more ignorant than most but I would be more nervous about the future if we didn't have the mad lad Gute and instead had one more last dance of the latest last dance with Rodgers.

My New Year's resolution is to dumb down my comments a tad so some of you can catch up with what I am throwing down.

Love and stuff,
Pantz

*One, two, three, four...I declare a thumb war. Now, I have taken somewhat of a shine towards Coach LaF. But, we need to have metrics for our HCs as well. Either that or Coach LaF needs to wear elevator shoes the next time the HCs shake hands after the game. Whenever KOC or Dan the Man Campbell shake his hand, they appear like GIANTs. Orrr, grow a beard and start chewing snuff and spat alot during the games. I miss the good ole days of Forrest Gregg's snarl and across the river, Coach Burnsie's bedtime stories...I digress. Sorry, gotta go make bank - have another modeling underwear shoot at Mall of America of all places.

Oh, I use to lawn bowl at Brit's Pub in downtown Mpls years ago. The 4 bowls (stones) we rolled per end were custom made. The heavy end had the color Green/Gold representing the 4 Super Bowl wins. The light end had the color purple with the 4 Super Bowl losses. The Vikings and the Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl.
But can it not be this season???

*My actual New Year's resolution is to lose some poundage. That means, I will look forward to my wife's cooking like never before. ;) Interestingly enough, we have a dog named "Lucky". He gets most of my meal portions under the table. He seems to howl sporadically at night, lost the glimmer in his eyes and hasn't humped any legs with his usual zest in a long, long time.

For better or for worse, just like my beloved Packers.

The lack of a consistent pass rush is the Achilles Heel for this defense. Most of Darnold's completions were after he had time to go through his complete progressions.

It doesn't matter who you have in the secondary if they have to cover for five full seconds. Someone will get open.

Until they can get the QB off his spot and uncomfortable, they will continue to surrender career passing yards to opposing QB's.

Possible Dance Card for the Packers: Beat the Eagles in the WC Round, beat the Ugly Purple in the Div Round, then beat the Lions in the NFCCC.

Call it the Revenge Road Trip.

And then play the Chiefs in a return match up of SB I...in the Battle of New Orleans.

For many it is fear of accepting what that (and previous seasons) is telling us. Wilde was right. Fear of the unknown makes many stick with the flaws of the present long after it’s rational to do so. Often passive aggressively. If LaFleur is the 3rd best coach in this conference then our short and long term prospects aren’t good with him. He looks to be that despite longer tenure. He’s been tactically whipped as much as his team have been outplayed.

However change makes no guarantees. We might have to get worse before we get better. It’s like the Josh Myers argument, not very good over a long period but reliable and trusted. I used to call it the Dean Lowry conundrum. We can keep going and hoping things suddenly get better despite the evidence piling up to the contrary, or we bite the bullet and accept that if we want to really compete we need a change of culture and philosophy.

Settle for being good against the not so good or risk finding a coach who can elevate a roster and win games we really have no business winning as Holmgren and McCarthy did. LaFleur has never really managed that in 7 years. Right now, it would be seen as a triumph if we live up to our potential. Therein lies the crux. Under LaFleur we have never exceeded our potential. We have under shot it each year.

For many the idea of risking being better and potentially getting worse at first is alarming. To me, the constant underachievement on field and tactically and inability to learn year to year is far more depressing. We heard the same over moving on from Rodgers. I doubt that there are many now who doubt that was a wrong decision with hindsight. It’s sad, but it’s move on or continue to be what we have consistently proven we are.

A team's success is dependent on how good the #22 starter is.

No. A team's success depends most on what the guys at the top of the food chain do: The QB, the RB, some of your better defenders. The guys who are getting paid.

Kenny Clark, who has stayed healthy and been solid. $26M
Jaire Alexander, who has played in 7 games. $24M
Jordan Love, who missed two games and has run hot and cold. $21M
Jenkins, very solid at $15M.
Gary, solid at $11M
McKinney, a bargain at $8M.
Josh Jacobs, a bigger bargain at $5M

The team is going to go as far as these guys take us. If we fall short, it won't be because #13 on the list, commanding 1.36% of the salary cap, isn't "good enough".

"Constant underachievement"??? How do you even type that with a straight face. Playoffs 5 out 6. NFC semis 4 out of 5. Division title 4 out of 6. This is underachievement?

So far, this season, he's getting "tactically whipped" by Campbell, O'Donnell, and Siranni. He has vanquished 11 other HC's, right?

Let's see what Matt accomplishes vs those other 3 by season's end.

I like this team and its fight. If they do a belly flop in the playoffs, with a healthy squad, Ed Policy may have some hard decisions ahead.

I am realistic optimist. I lived through the 70's and 80's and began going to games as a season ticket holder during the dark days of Forest Gregg as HC.

3. The Trench.
4. The Vikings found a QB.

No move up for Q. Mitchell. Bullard vs Bullock, or J. Hicks. Cooper was a God send as he was a round one guy, but a lot of teams wasted picks on RTs. The trench has the high picks and a big Payroll w/out the results. Do not over-pay Zach Tom. The 49rs were arrogant letting Darnold walk and the Purple were lucky he was still around. A totally different story for O'Connell if he has to go with Mullens, or Hall as when Cousins hit the rack. I still promote the concept of solid veterans as the backup QB. They will Franchise Darnold and see if McCarthy recovers by 2026.

here's a couple more takeaways. the Packers receivers are mediocre, at best. I've said it before and i'm saying it again. most teams in the league have one or two receivers who are better than our best, whoever that is. reed's expected breakout season never materialized and he has all but disappeared. Watson can't stay on the field. doubs' is just ok. i'll await the usual avalanche of down votes.

lafleur seems smart but he still doesn't get it when it comes to managing the clock. letting the clock run for 11 seconds down to the two minute warning with three timeouts at your disposal is just plain stupid. never...let...the...clock...run...down. if he wants to call me i'll explain it to him.

he's not the only one. so many coaches in the NFL just can't seem to figure out this vital aspect of being a head coach. yesterday, Atlanta completed a pass for a first down at the redskins 22 yard line with 40 seconds left in the first half. instead of using one of their THREE timeouts, they tried to hurry to the line of scrimmage and run a play. they finally snapped the ball with 11 seconds left and threw an incomplete pass. they then kicked a field goal on the final play and went into the locker room with all three timeouts in their pocket. smh

I've seen other coaches do the same thing in that situation. The reasoning is that it's better to sacrifice 11 seconds now than risk losing 40 seconds later if you run out of timeouts.

It's perfectly clear that LaFleur has serious play calling weakness. Look back in history. It's 1972 and the Packers reached the playoffs for the first time in 5 years behind the rushing duo of John Brockington and MacCarther Lane only to run into the Washington Redskins coached by George Allen. Allen defended the Packers with an eleven man defensive line and stopped the running game in its tracks. Has LaFleur ever looked at that type of defense...ever? In the Viking game, Packers had the ball on 3rd down and 2. LaFleur calls a running play against a 8 man defensive line...for no gain. What idiot would do that? This was only one of his famous stupid offensive calls. Packer head coach is missing something and it's play calling.

Why all of the negativity? I really believe this team is capable of beating the Lions, Vikings and Eagles in the playoffs. We've played them all close. If we can get some key players back and bring our 'A' game, we can win in the playoffs! MLF brought a little late season magic last year. We could use some more of that as well!

Getting pretty tired of guys like Stockholder et al - with all the doomsday predictions and comments. Who is in the playoffs - who has not really had a whole bunch of top picks because we have always in the playoffs. Who is at home crying and wishing for different results. Cowboys, 49ers Cinci Miami - all supposed Superbowl contenders with MVP type QB's - As I posted elsewhere - even if we didnt have too many drops and fumbles that effected last game - it only takes a bit to figure that our 2nd year starter QB is progressing well with the youngest roster and unlike some other teams dont rely on a running QB who dont last long- Washington used to have a running QB - remember RG3 - these guys just dont last - If I was on the other team - I would pound him and pound him even if it meant a roughing the passer penalty. Miami - Arizona - even Hurts - they all eventually have to learn not to run those RPO's or suffer the consequences. But finally we are still the youngest team in the league - never mind the playoffs.

You are wrong about those other QBs - other than the monster Allen who runs over them the same as Jackson - they are running to extend plays and then get down and use the rules. And they have all been hurt and missed games - as eventually big guys like Allen and Jackson have missed time - but they have the bodies for it. And yes those two teams have not been eliminated - but my general point still stands - we ARE in and they are relying on help - and are not currently in.

I kind of think we got a little ahead of ourselves with expectations when last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year and the Packers out kicked their coverage. At the beginning of last year, I think we all would have been pretty happy with staring at a 12-5 record at the end of this year. I think we are seeing who this team really is now, and its missing some pieces to take it to the next level. If Watson, Alexander, and Evan Williams play, maybe that gets us close, but I still think they need a little more help.

You should stop over in Detroit and Minneapolis and view the Super Bowl trophies sometime. Or, maybe make a trip to Arlington and see how successful "big market" teams with "big market thinking" have been in the last 30 years.

The NFL is a socialist entity. Broadcast revenue is shared equally among ALL teams. That's where the big bucks are. There is a salary cap. Schedules are handicapped based upon prior year record. Draft order is determined by win-loss records. Parity is the goal. If success in the NFL were determined by market size, we'd see consistently great teams in New York, LA and Chicago, right?

The game is being grown to be a worldwide draw. The Packers are already there in terms of popularity. We have been fortunate to have a quality organization with great players for since the mid 1990s. We have a chance at a Super Bowl this year. It's the chance earned by making the playoffs.

You shouldn't mention Arlington. I live in Texas, and this is some real pain and agony. Nobody wears Cowboy gear and when they see me in my Packers gear they always act like a whipped dog and move sideways. It's real suffering. I have friends here who are Cowboy fans and I actually feel sorry for them. Not to mention I really hope they beat Washington this week, because I'd rather play in LA than Philly.

Satisfied, or copacetic? I've enjoyed the LaFleur years. I remember the Dan Devine years. The Forrest Gregg years. The Lindy Infante years.

1 team wins the Superbowl, so on average, an average franchise would win 1 in 32 years. We've won 2 in 27 years, so we're better than twice the aveage in that regard.

16 teams in the NFC, 2 make the Championship game. That means that on average, a franchise should make the Championship game once every 8 years. We're waaaay beyond that.

The first step in winning a Super Bowl is putting an organization in place that can put a consistently good team on the field, which is what we're doing.

Then you have to make the playoffs, which we've done 5 out of 6 times.
Then you need to advance to the semi-finals, which we've done four out of 5 seasons.

I think that's a pretty good record, personally.

Not saying Love is the sole reason for the loss but his decision making is baffling. Same/similar mistakes.

MLF as a head coach isn't helping and while MLF isn't dropping the passes... his play calling is questionable.

Kraft has to be more involved. Don't abandon the run game. Take the FN points.

It's just amazing the draft capital GB has spent on the D with seemingly the same results.

It's great were in the playoffs. Yes, hopefully we can have a playoff run. It's just frustrating.

Give MLF one more year to get us to the SB. No appearance, new head coach.

A great head coach finds a way to overcome these issues...

I'm a Packer fan, and always have been. I don't get too caught up in the media hype machine and consider myself a realist. I believe to be the best, you must be able to "realistically" self assess your abilities and CORRECT your deficiencies immediately. Which is likely not going to be viewed well in this fan forum.

This article, from a strategic standpoint, rings true to me. We are NOT a great team yet. We have clear deficiencies that deter us from being a great team: (1) We are too young and inexperienced - from QB, to receivers, even our DC. This is the cost of building a young team. We have to live with these frustrating growing pains when few veteran players are on the roster (2) Our HC is a great offensive mind, but a poor in-game decision maker. (3) GB is a small market team, run like a small market team. The GM had the cap room this year to pick up veterans - especially in the DB room - to improve us this year. The Lions did it. The Vikes did it. GB did not. No surprise there, outside of the off season free agent acquisitions that clearly made us better. We had the cap space, so why not? Argh!

I would like to think - with my fan heart - that we will magically fix our issues and be a force in the playoffs. But realistically, I don't see it for the above reasons. I hate coach excuses like "the margins are razor thin". Yes, they may be, but bold moves and realistic self assessment are needed here to win in the playoffs. GPG

ML has completely changed last seasons offense with Jacobs running the ball. Last season we were running and gunning all over the field. A lot of pass drops but it cleaned up later in the season for a pretty scrappy WR group. Now they have been pass blocking so much they can't catch a pass again. I believe we went too extreme with the run game. It works great on mediocre teams we should and did beat but poor in-doors in enemy territory. The testament of differences between Vikings top 3 WR's and all of our WR's is a drop off of a 10 to a 5. The game plan and play calling was crap with no adjustment. JL looks like early last ROOK season. WR's playing like crap also. Made Pack look like JV HS football team. I thought the defense held up okay in first half with zero pressure on the QB. Vikings ran out their top 3 WR's and got it done....Something Pack has never done against good teams. There is a HUGE talent drop off in the WR department for our team....and it showed. Huge drop off in defensive rushing game. These things need to be addressed this off-season as well as no pass rush from the DL and stronger OL. We got the $.....IT'S TIME TO BUY WHAT WE NEED TO GET OVER THE HUMP.

Oh, now THAT's funny.

In two seasons without Rodgers, we've made the playoffs twice.

Rodgers missed the playoffs in 2017, and again in 2018. Lafleur was able to resurrect him for a couple of great seasons, but he was done by the end of 2021. He missed the playoffs the next year and was traded away, where he missed an entire season with injury and then returned this year and pretty much sucked, got his coach fired, and has pretty much driven the franchise into the ditch.

So yeah....Rodgers making MLF look good is a lot more probable that MLF making Rodgers look good.

I love history. Clearly, it is not a hard science.

Rodgers missed the playoffs in 2017 and 2018 because he had a coach who was making him look bad and a GM who was past it.

"He [AR] was done by the end of 2021." He was the MVP of the league.

"He missed the playoffs the next year...." That reminds of TT getting the GM job in 2005 but not the power to hire his own HC. So he lets Wahle and Rivera walk and replaces them with 7th round pick Will Whitaker and Adrian Klemm, who never played another game after the 2005 season. In point of fact, Whitaker never played another game after 2005. Both guards never played again.

Of course, Sherman couldn't win with the deck stacked that much against him. With the foundation laid, out goes Sherman, and only then (2006) does TT open the checkbook for Woodson and Pickett. And TT promptly uses the 47th and 75th picks of the 2006 draft on guards so his chosen HC is not as far behind the eight ball as Sherman was.

After laying the foundation by drafting just one WR - amari Rodgers in the 3rd round - in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 drafts, Gute trades AR.

All the talk from about a year ago was how 25 was supposed to be the year to make the run. How this team would do in 24, after a surprising 23 season was bonus. Realistically this was a hopefully continue to build and make the playoffs year and whatever might happen will happen.

So has it turned out much differently than that? The safety position was greatly improved from free agency and the draft. The cornerback position still desperately needs help. Alexander needs to go, some people say. Well, it will eventually happen but most likely that will be after next season. He's got about a half dozen games yet to play in Green Bay at the money they have invested in him for 2025. I wouldn't say it couldn't happen but the cap numbers just don't look great for an earlier move on. Who would give up the farm for a 50% player? You might have to beg someone to take him for a low draft pick if they agree to eat some of his cap and that would be a best case scenario.

I would wonder about shopping Gary. There might be a much better fit/team for him out there that would be willing to deal. The defensive front needs help and they aren't getting it done in the current configuration. At times it looks close. The team is saddled with the Clark deal so that and his age makes him less deal-able. A move on from Gary to get better system fits on the defensive front should not be off the table. He's very good but he ain't great and he's getting paid to be great. They will continue to run the LVN experiment in hopes that he develops. We'll see. Trouble is, the college edge rusher group doesn't look promising in 25 so they may want to hang onto Gary. But if you could flip him for a real beast lineman, it is worth a look.

Cooper was the great pick of the draft. Walker has started to "get it" and they'll have hopes with him. That being said, linebackers aren't the biggest needs as much as cornerbacks and defensive line. This is where the next makeover is needed between draft and FA.

Watching that Minnesota game it was just sick how great the hands were on those receivers. It kinda showed how the GB receivers are not that elite. All pretty darn good, at times, but still developing. Which leads to the accuracy and decisions of Jordan Love. He's good. But he ain't top five good. Is he top ten good? Maybe. At times he looks like he can be. At other times he has you wondering if we've already witnessed his ceiling. That can be addressed with game planning and play calling. The season started out with a lot of picks, some hospital balls, plus his own injury/recovery and that got modified to much more run heavy and better pass opportunities.

They made the playoffs with a work in progress. Things can still happen against the odds. They have some identifiable weaknesses and needs to be addressed if they are going to get to that next level because they are not on that level yet.

I agree with the general tenor of your comment. Yeah, I think 2025 and 2026 were the years GB had circled. Maybe 2027 as well. I think the structure and progression of the cap numbers in Love's contract support those years.

You wrote enough that likely there would be things I agree with and others I don't.

Safety room fixed! Check.

CB desperate? Naw, Jaire, Nixon, Valentine is ok. Not great and GB should draft a CB with a top 100 pick, but survivable.

[Hard to trade Jaire when he is owed $17.5M. Maybe he will redo his contract, either with GB - paycut - or with another team in a trade scenario. I have a hard time seeing him accept a pay cut though.]

Edge: Need help badly. DEs are too hard to find to just chuck
Gary. Alas, if the draft is bad as you say (I don't watch college football), I suppose that means taking a chance on someone like Marcus Davenport, or finding a Leonard Floyd type.

DT: Need help pretty bad. Wyatt flashes but remember he played 12 snaps and 10 of them were pass rushes. He already is a pass rush specialist. Laughing when you wrote how GB is stuck with Clark's contract. You realize the new years have not even started yet? I have been writing about Clark regressing for 2 years now. That is, I have been bitching about Clark for years now. I guess that makes me a pessimist. Gute did not agree. I thought someone was dyslexic: it should have been $12M AAV, not $21M.

ILB: Okay. Check.

OL: Need a center. They need a center even if they re-sign Myers. A guard would not hurt, either. Ditto OT.

WR: Could use a #1 or a high volume possession type.

RB: OK
TE: OK. No harm taking a flyer on day 3. TEs come from most rounds.
QB: OK.

Packer fans would have to be ready to cope with what it would take to reach the next level.
There would be stricter accountability, many more firings, less excuse-making, letting go of players who don't perform. The Vikings and Lion's organizations are serious from the owner on down.
They are serious about winning. They recognize problems, fix them quickly, they draft well, develop well and don't keep under-performers around.
The Packers FO/coaches do not have that level of organizational excellence as of now.
It will likely take 5 years before the Pack gets serious about what it takes.

So, I would say that fans should be OK with the Packers being a top 8 team.
Then everyone could relax. But the Pack are not going to the SB anytime soon with this group of coaches/GM.

NO......NOW they are serious. I would have to agree that they seem to have a more serious take on things from the past-to be fair. GB knows we need to fix the pass rush...WR's dropping too many balls....Out-Planned-coached....etc. let's see how serious GB is at fixing all of our problems. Lions and Vikings are in really good shape for now. Bears are a good HC away from being a more serious force in the North. Gute better be doing something more than nothing, which is what he did at the trade deadline. GPG

Years ago? Minnesota was 7-10 LAST year. The Lions FINALLY started playing decent about a year and a half ago after decades of being the NFL's doormat.

How about we wait until they actually win something other than regular season games before we claim these are shining examples of organizations that know to win.

GB has not won squat in going on 15 yrs. either. Our GM could have done many things over the years and I can't remember 1 significant thing they have done in the last 15 to get us back or over the top to help us in the past seasons NFCC game runs at the trade deadline. Like it or not both the Lions and Vikings are hitting on several top picks and FA's to help them partially because of their losing records. They both could be juggernauts as well as Bears if they get Vrabel as a HC. Gute
needs to fix both trenches and a game wrecking DE/OLB + top CB1. These losses have showed us multiple times exactly what we needed to get past those teams and waiting to the 4th Quarter to start playing is not when you want to start playing against good teams. We are not playing as good as last season (late)...that's on our COACHING and players not wanting it enough as a whole. The NORTH is hereby going to be tuff sledding for a while.

I like Brooks, his numbers are about the same as last year on a per snap basis, but he was more consistent last year. Wyatt and Clark were tearing it up before Wyatt got a concussion, per PFF Wyatt had 4 pressures in 12 snaps(not all passing attempts). On the 2nd drive they started out with Wooden and Brooks at DT and they were getting stonewalled. The Packers had 20 pressures on 43 passing attempts but the snaps where they didn't get pressure was glaring and the Vikings line is no great shakes, especially on the left side.

I think another pass rusher is priority one in the draft in April. Either a big guy that shows more than Slaton on passing downs or a rotational 3T to compete for passing down snaps. I'd say DE as well but the smaller speed rushers will most likely be gone by the time the Packers pick. I seriously doubt it but if the Edge from Tennessee is there grab him, throw him on there on 2nd and 3rd down and longs and don't look back.

We could be forced to trade/ dip in to FA early, rather than gamble in the draft. We will need to do something and we probably need results early. We do not have the personnel needed for the D we’ve adopted, with the benefit of hindsight.

Um, so some people (er, me) thought Zayne Anderson was playing really well and were sorry to see him leave after 11 snaps (forced a punt and a FG). But since those 11 snaps overlap with Wyatt's 12 snaps pretty well, maybe there is a relationship? A synergy, or to use the jargon - complementary football?

Anderson played the 1st defensive snaps of his career but he turns 28 in a couple of days so he's been in a few meetings. Kudos to him for being prepared to.ay when he got the call. He's definitely worth bringing back on a vet minimum plus a little deal. I said it somewhere else but I think Bullard is probably better off if they had put him at safety or nickel in TC and not both but that could play dividends next year. This year he's hesitating too much. Georgia is pretty well known for having a simple plan on D, that Kirby Smart tweaks every year, with top athletes.

Wyatt and Clark were so good on that 1st drive that I thought it's going to be a good day. Wooden and Brooks were so ineffective on the 2nd drive I thought Wyatt and Clark were going to have to play a lot of snaps. Once Wyatt went out the Vikings just double teamed Clark and the inside pressure all but dried up.

He didn't get low fast enough on that tackle and took the head-butt. Hopefully, he can shake it off.

Why does anyone mention Alexander as a deficiency, like he’s actually part of the team? He’s given them nothing except pea brain dead ball fouls ( because he’s a tough guy) a stupid embarrassing coin flip fiasco , and a whole lotta injuries.
As for any potential match up with Tampa.. they crushed the Packers last year. The Packers are like the junior league physical team. They bully the 49ers. The big boys , Detroit, Minnesota and Philly force the Packers into mistakes with their physical play.
It’s disappointing to see the regression.
They need two corners, and linebackers and an awful lot of help on the d line.
Lots of $$ tied up in Jordan Love and he’s about the 12th best quarterback in the league. And he’s trending down with the emergence of Daniels and Nix.

The proof is in the pudding. Numbers don't lie. The Packer's are not in the top three because the top three have had better drafts and acquisitions of players. Detroit was gifted with multiple high picks to trade for their current QB from the Rams. One of those taken was Gibbs. With Gibbs the entire offense changed and became dynamic and explosive both on the ground and through the air.
Moreover, their defense is extremely banged up but with their offense they will beat anyone. Gibbs will have a field day against the Vikings both by running and catching short passes.
The Eagles will also be outscored. The eagles dramatically improved their defense by drafting a top CB and a safety (Cooper De-Jean) so If anyone can beat the lions it would be the Eagles. I like the lions in that match up. No one can stop their offense. Period, Against the top teams our secondary has been non existent. Last year it was safeties this year CB's have been the problem. Jaire's loss is an enigma. He needs to look into long term treatment for whatever ails him. His loss has really hurt the Packers. Finally after the Vikings game Love seems a bit over rated. Sorry.
